What is Zoysia Tenuifolia?

Zoysia tenuifolia is fast becoming Australia's favourite 'No Mow' Grass. It forms fluffy, moss-like mounds and makes an ideal groundcover for Japanese / Balinese Gardens, Rockeries and Fairy Gardens.

Zoysia is perfect for use between Pavers or Stepping Stones or as a Feature Plant in a Large Pots. It's Fine, Dark Green leaves and Dense Undulating habit makes it ideal candidate for weed control when planted en-mass. It's wavy appearance makes it a fantastic architectural plant.

Zoysia tenuifolia is native to Asia, and is named after botanist  Karl von Zois. Karl von Zois zu Laibach was a Carniolan amateur botanist and plant collector. He is best known today as the namesake of zoysiagrass, which was named by Carl Ludwig Willdenow in 1801. The bellflower Campanula zoysii is also named after him.

A warm-season grass, its deep root system allows it to tolerate drought better than many other turf grasses. It is also tolerant of shade, cold and foot traffic.

Zoysia tenuifolia is thought to originate from the Mascarene Islands. Zoysia tenuifolia is also referred to as Mascarene grass.

Zoysia tenuifolia is known by many Common Names including;

Zoysia Tenuifolia is mainly utilised as a ground cover in Oriental Gardens, among rocks and ponds, and makes a spectacular architectural specimen as it can also grow over rocks and other structures in the garden. It is also used to great effect when planted between pavers.

Anyone who has visited the Hunter Valley Gardens will tell you, the Zoysia tenuifolia looks absolutely magnificent in the oriental setting.

The Oriental Garden draws its influence from primarily Japanese and Korean gardens and is a place of harmony, balance and serenity.

With the one of the largest lawns of Zoysia tenuifolia (Korean Velvet Grass) in Australia, some of the other flowers and plants include; Cloud Trees which are a native Lilly Pilly species, Syzygium australe “Tiny Trev” and “Bush Christmas”, Salvia, Liriope along with various topiaries which are created using Buxus japonica or Japanese Box. The stunning Japanese Iris or Iris ensata grows along the water’s edge producing stunning purple/blue flowers. Make sure you don’t miss the superb late Winter and Spring display of Azaleas, Camellias and Magnolias.

This garden is precisely trimmed and manicured with natural curves making it flow among its surroundings.

One of its main features is a two-story traditional Japanese pagoda surrounded by natural Australian granite. The pond is home to many colourful and beautiful Koi.

One of the best places to view the Oriental Garden is from the top of the Italian Grotto, one of the most stunning vantage points in Hunter Valley Gardens.

He launched Tranquil Havens (tranquilhavens.com.au),  an online nursery selling Dwarf Mondo and Zoysia, his true love, by mail-order. Graeme says his success, despite his lack of horticultural experience, is a guarantee to other gardeners of the plant’s adaptability. It grows in sun and shade, only complains if left in soggy soil, and is not particularly expensive.

Zoysia tenuifolia is also a great lawn and sloping bank grass species, but is much more appealing when used as an ornamental grass ground cover, as it possesses an unusual clumping or mounding appearance.

Zoysia grass makes an excellent ground cover for Japanese Themed Gardens where you want to simulate a moss style landscape or where trees make establishing a conventional lawn difficult.

Zoysia tenuifolia is mainly used as a ground cover because of its tendency to grow in an undulating way, creating ripples and small hills right up to the trunks of trees in deep shade. Newly established Zoysias will adjust to shading as the surrounding Shrubs and trees mature.

Zoysia grasses are fairly drought-tolerant and can remain green for weeks without water, even on a sand-based soil. They cope so well with drought because they in-roll their leaves to conserve moisture and develop a very deep root system.

As can be seen in the Graph below, Korean Velvet Grass really does have the competition covered.

Zoysia tenuifolia does not tolerate more than an occasional water-logging, so make sure that your soil has good internal draining.They will not tolerate both shade and water-logging.

Your Zoysia will tolerate a wide range of soil types from Acid to Neutral pH.

Because Zoysia forms such a very dense lawn, it has a greater resistance to invasion by weeds than other lawn grasses, such as couch, buffalo or Kikuyu.

Zoysia tenuifolia has a very fine texture and is dark green in colour.

The slow growth rate of Zoysia tenuifolia reduces the need for mowing and its nitrogen requirement is lower than that of most grasses. Spreading is by rhizomes (underground runners).

The slow growth rate of Zoysia does mean that damaged areas take more time to repair, but because Zoysia leaves have such high silica levels, it makes Zoysia extremely wear-tolerant, compared with other warm-season turf grasses.

Also, because it is a slow growing variety of grass, commercial growing of Zoysia is a more expensive exercise, but in my opinion, this is outweighed by the greatly reduced frequency of mowing.

Zoysias can tolerate much lower soil fertility than other grasses, such as couch, buffalo and Kikuyu, but will respond to a nitrogen fertiliser by faster growth and a deeper green colour.

We recommend Dino-fert (Dynamic Lifter) Granules and or a slow-release fertilisers to deliver the nitrogen required by Zoysias.

Really Low Temperatures and Water-logging are about the only things that has the slightest impact on Zoysia tenuifolia. But, as can be seen in the photograph below, it will survive even under the harshest of Winter conditions.
